Regards. Ravi SteveRay: Interesting to note that only a quarter of respondents are from education. That's good for broad coverage. RaviSharma: @Amanda: For later response - Since I did not save my answers, can I retrieve my own answers to compare where I stand in the overall responses. I do not want acesss to others surveys? AmandaVizedom: @Ravi - I don't think that there is any way to do that. Megan Mickelson: @Amanda: I'm sorry if you covered this, but who exactly was surveyed? ArturoSanchez: @Megan: see - http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2010_Survey Megan Mickelson: Thank you Arturo ArturoSanchez: @Megan: my pleasure AmandaVizedom: @Megan: The link Arturo provided gives intended audience. However, we didn't have an obvious way to communicate the invitation and motivation to that audience. In fact, we ended up stepping-out the solicitation in a somewhat ad-hoc way, starting with members of the Ontolog and Ontology Summit mailing lists and requesting that members help to distribute the solicitation further. We also asked participants in sessions like this one to provide further suggestions. I collected those suggestions and others provided in the survey, on the mailing list, or in direct communication, and sent email solicitations to those people as well. Finally, I posted the broad solicitation text on the wiki (as linked on the Surveys main page) in order to have a link to post in short forms such as Twitter. This I tweeted, in various forms, to hashtags: #ontology, #linkeddata, #semantic, #semanticweb, #ontologysummit2010, #iswc2009, #tbc09, perhaps others. It got some pickup and ReTweet action, but with more lead time I think we could expect more. I also posted to the related LinkedIn groups I could find. AmandaVizedom: @Megan - That's just the broad sweeps. I also pinged my own professional contacts; I expect others did, too. Megan Mickelson: Thank you, Amanda. AmandaVizedom: @Megan, and all: You're welcome. Note that the survey is still open through 11 Mar - I will do an update before the Symposium. Please feel free to pass along to others you think should contribute! ArturoSanchez: Yes, very good session! We should have more sessions like that! SteveRay: @Amanda: It would be good to cross-check slide 16 results with the proposed curriculum. SteveRay: @Amanda: Similarly with slide 28. SteveRay: @Peter: We need to be careful to distinguish mass understanding from mass appreciation, of ontology. The RT Delphi study asked about mass understanding. PeterYim: @Steve: fair ... although I using "appreciation" in a loose colloquial sense (note: it's not on the slide (slide#13)) ... since "appreciation" for mathematics, physics or music takes on rather different meanings [this clarification was added subsequently] AmandaVizedom: Addendum to what Peter is saying: much of the European and/or Academic development is not addressed to the what I perceive as the largest persistent needs. At ISWC, many of the presenters agreed but had no way of getting actual industrial use cases. RaviSharma: @Amanda: Just to record the Question slightly out of scope but related to Peter's Comment, I was wondering if it is possible to filter or project likelihood of decision maker type professionals / managers views in support of ontologies, may be we have to do another federal and R&D manager's survey to be able to get an idea of their awareness of power of ontologies to solve their problems. AmandaVizedom: Agree with Arturo about opportunity in Health area. Want to add: Transparency and Interoperability are also funded priorities in the US now. Not clear to me whether the communication path between those with the need and those with the solution is any better. Jeremy Arca: Wondering if anyone can recommend some good Ontology development courses that one can take? MariaKeet: @amanda: on lack of industry use cases: could it be that industry does not want to shout around they are using ontologies, as competitive advantage? AmandaVizedom: @Maria: possibly, but also many orgs needing semantic solutions are gov and don't have good mechanisms for doing so. AmandaVizedom: Recording my comment on the phone:There has been some off-line suggestion that we develop mechanisms of gathering info on an ongoing basis. The idea would be to further develop these snapshots and create some means of regularly updating them. For future discussion... PeterYim: The survey results are accessible from the Survey page at: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2010_Survey (look towards the end of each section) Jeremy Arca: There is a Semantic Web Health Care and Life Sciences (HCLS) Interest Group ...http://ow.ly/16EET1 ArturoSanchez: @Jeremy Arca: yes, I was aware of it ... thanks! JoelBender: Thank you! MariaKeet: thanks for conducting and synthesising the survey results! bye RaviSharma: @Steve: are there requirements other than NIST ack of participation request. RaviSharma: thanks. PeterYim: thank you all for participation ... talk to you again next Thu 2010.03.11 at the "Sync-up" virtual session, before we all head toward the Mar 15&16 Symposium PeterYim: -- session ended 12:3 pm PST --
